Lisbon or Porto: which one fits your trip?
Sabrina Wahome · 26 September 2026
Lisbon is bigger, livelier and more spread out — better suited to trips where you want a mix of nightlife, day trips (Sintra, Cascais) and a wider range of neighbourhoods to explore.
Porto is smaller, more compact and walkable, with a slower pace that suits shorter stays or travellers who prefer to settle into one area rather than cover ground.
If you're combining both cities, 2-3 nights in Porto and 4-5 in Lisbon is a comfortable split for a week-long trip, with a scenic train ride between them.
For wine lovers: Porto has the edge, sitting right at the mouth of the Douro Valley.
